Me and pot.jpg

I only discovered the delights of working with clay when my lifelong interest in art and crafts led me to undertake an Access course in Art and Design at Bracknell and Wokingham College in 2003/4. At the end of that year, full-time work meant that I did not have the time to persue the pleasure of 'playing with clay' for a few years. In 2008 I joined a local evening class in ceramics, this led to the purchase of my own kiln in 2012 and my husband building my lovely garden studio in 2015. He has now built me a bigger and better studio at our home near Llanwrtyd Wells.

My love of nature can be seen in most of my work; often as inspiration for a design or through use of natural objects such as driftwood, leaves and seeds within the work.

All of my work is currently made using a variety of hand building techniques - coiling, slabbing, pinching & sculpting. I am an avid beachcomber and collect pieces of 'sea glass', I often use these to add to my work, liking the unpredictability of the colour of the glass after firing. Due to my love of gardening, I often make work which is suitable for use and/or ornamentation in the garden, firing the work to stoneware temperature to ensure frost resistance.

I also love working with Ashraf Hanna clay which burnishes very well using polished stones. I bisque fire this work to 950°C, this means that the clay is still slightly porous and will absorb the smoke when I fire the pieces in my garden incinerator or a Raku kiln. Once cleaned, the pieces are polished with clear beeswax.

I continue to experiment with other clays to try out some of the many ideas which fill my sketchbooks.
