Smoking & Raku

My work to be smoked is handbuilt (typically pinched and/or coiled) using Ashraf Hanna clay. When the clay is leatherhard it is burnished using polished stones, sometimes coloured slip is applied prior to burnishing. The work is bisque fired to 950°C. I often wrap the pieces in silver foil with slits or holes to allow a certain amount of smoke to penetrate. It is smoked in a garden incinerator with sawdust and newspaper. After cleaning it is finally polished with clear beeswax.

I love the unpredictability of the results of smoking; if I am not happy with the result I can bisque fire again to remove the smoke and try again.

In 2018 a great potter friend and I made a raku kiln, we are having great fun experimenting with various raku techniques. Once again my work is handbuilt using Ashraf Hanna clay and often burnished to then use naked raku techniques.
